Black and White
About The Project: Virtual Exhibition + Artist’s Interview
Open Call for Artists is a platform that brings artists and audiences together through open calls and virtual exhibitions. It provides artists with opportunities to share their work, explore ideas, and reach wider audiences, while creating an online space for people to discover different artistic practices and perspectives.
Black & White is a virtual exhibition presented by Open Call for Artists, inviting artists to explore the possibilities of creating without colour. Through different mediums and approaches, the exhibition considers how light, shadow, contrast, and texture can shape an image, express an idea, or tell a story.
Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme in their own way, drawing inspiration from people, nature, architecture, everyday life, or abstract ideas. From photography and painting to drawing, digital art, collage, and mixed media, each work offers a different perspective on the relationship between black, white, and the many shades in between.
Bringing these interpretations together in a virtual space allows audiences to discover a range of creative approaches and experience how artists respond to a shared theme. It also invites viewers to look beyond colour and pay closer attention to the details, feelings, and ideas that give each work its meaning.
Through Black & White, Open Call for Artists celebrates individual expression and the value of seeing familiar things differently. The exhibition offers artists a space to share their perspectives and audiences an opportunity to discover just how much can be expressed through a limited palette.

Exhibition Note
Black & White: A Virtual Exhibition
Think of an old family photograph, a newspaper sketch, or the black-and-white film you watched years ago and still remember. Black and white has been part of how we record, share, and experience the world for generations. Yet it continues to find its place in art, not simply as a choice of colour, but as a way of looking at things.
Without colour, other details begin to stand out. The shape of a face, the lines of a building, the texture of a piece of fabric, or the way sunlight falls across a room can take on a different importance. Even an ordinary subject can feel new when the artist chooses to show it in black and white.
For artists, this opens up a lot of room to experiment. A drawing might rely on the difference between a dark line and an empty space. A photograph might use shadows to change the mood of a familiar place. A painting might explore how many shades can exist between black and white. The possibilities are not as limited as they might first appear.
Black and white can also be playful, unexpected, or full of character. It does not always have to be serious or dramatic. Sometimes, it is simply the best way to show a particular subject, bring out an interesting detail, or create an image that feels right to the artist.
There is no one way to approach this theme. Some artists may be drawn to people and everyday moments, while others may explore nature, architecture, patterns, or abstract forms. Each artist brings a different eye to the same two colours, and that is part of what makes the theme interesting.
Black & White invites artists to explore what they can do with this simple palette. It is an opportunity to try something new, revisit a familiar approach, or look at an idea from a different angle.
After all, sometimes the most interesting part of making art is discovering what you can do with what you already have.
